Tahir Elfitori is a grade 7 student at Champlain Discovery School in Pembroke, Ontario. He is the oldest child of four children. Tahir first became interested in science when a friend of his family, Rebeccah Sandrelli, was a medalist at four Canada Wide Science Fairs. She also was chosen to participate in the Schools on Board Arctic Net Field Program. These experiences really impressed on Tahir that science could create new opportunities. This past spring, Tahir had his first occasion to enter a science experiment at his school science fair. With the extreme winter conditions this year, his experiment investigated the effectiveness of substances in melting ice. Winning this fair allowed Tahir to compete at the regional level, Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair. Tahir Elfitori won First Place, Junior Life Sciences, Best Environmental Project, the Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Award of Excellence and ultimately the opportunity to be a finalist at the Canada Wide Science Fair this year in Windsor, Ontario. Tahir has many interests apart from science. He is a Junior Leader for Right to Play. He also really enjoys public speaking, competing this year at the branch championship in his community after winning first place within his school. Sports also play an important role in Tahir’s daily activities. He has been a member of the basketball, cross country and track and field teams. His favourite sport is soccer. Tahir is bilingual in English and Arabic and he enjoys visiting his family in Libya during the summer break. Tahir Elfitori would like to continue pursuing the field of science in the future. His immediate goal is to once again be a finalist and hopefully a medalist at the Canada Wide Science Fair. For the future, his ambition is to become a laparoscopic Surgeon.
