Other Options: Financial Institution

Government student loans are not available to all students and are awarded to students that meet the financial need criteria set out by the individual governments. Another option for students is to apply to a financial institute such as a bank, trust company or a credit union. These institutes all have developed funding programs that are specifically geared to students and usually have two main options available, a loan or a line of credit for qualifying students. Once again like government loans, each financial institute has different criteria for deciding where a loan or line of credit will be issued, so it’s important to visit as many as possible.

The following is a list of the main banks, but don’t forget to also look at what trust companies and credit unions have available to students:

Bank of Montreal

Bank of Nova Scotia,,294,00.html

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce

Royal Bank of Canada

Toronto Dominion Bank
