“The Wonderful World of Robots” Workshop

Robotic Workshop 3

This workshop will introduce young students into “The Wonderful World of Robots”. They will have a chance to build and test a robot in a team setting using Lego Mindstorms NXT components. They will also get the opportunity to learn some real basic programming for the robot. This exciting introductory program will challenge the beginner to build a real working robot in a fun but competitive environment. Each team will have a chance at showcasing their robot at the end of the workshop, by competing against the other teams. The participant will have had fun, learnt the basics of how to build a functional Lego robot, and worked in a cooperative team setting.

Details: This workshop is for children age 8-12 and we can currently accommodate 12 children in each workshop. Each workshop has 4 instructors present. The workshop is free by dropping off a donation of a non-perishable food for the local food bank and/or toy for a child in need on the day of the workshop.

“Our first robotics workshop was a great success with some really amazing looking robots. I am always fascinated but the imaginations and creativity of young minds when it comes to designing. I feel this is because they have no limits and are able to think completely out of the box. The great part about this particular workshop was just not all the fun the kids had, it was their generosity in adding to our donations for the local food bank and toy drive for kids in need.”

“The Wonderful World of Insects” Workshop

developing innovations exotic bugs

There are more than a million different kinds of insects on Earth, and new species are being discovered almost everyday. There are more insects on Earth than any other kind of creature including humans. It is estimated that there are over 2 million insects for every single person.

This workshop will introduce young students into “The Wonderful World of Insects”. They will have a chance to learn a number of interesting facts about some of their favourite insects, along with what insects are considered good and which ones are considered to be bad. This exciting introductory program will allow the participants to get up-close to the insects, through the use of our stereoscopic microscope. There will be some discussion about some other species that are not considered insects, such as spiders.

Details: This workshop is for children age 6-10 and we can currently accommodate 12 children in each workshop. Each workshop has 4 instructors present. The workshop is free by dropping off a donation of a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related book on the day of the workshop. The books will be donated to a local charity as gifts for children in need or placed in a library or school that requires STEM related books in order to help inspire young minds.

“Even though we have been out in the community teaching “The Wonderful World Of Insects” through our outreach program for the last 6 months, it was really nice to be able to spend much more time teaching the finer details of each insect in our collection in this workshop setting. The kids really enjoyed be able to get a close-up look at a number of the insects using our new stereoscopic microscope. We would like to thank all the kids for their generous donations to our STEM book drive.”
